If lived experience is a myriad of changing conversations (improvisations) with things, images, sounds, words, people and place, then responding can have many languages and impulses and voice the possibility for transformation. What happens then when you respond to the ordinary with unfamiliar modes that take you to places of discomfort or pleasure? And, how do images, sounds and text sift, shift and coalesce to form an inventory of experiencing the ordinary?

Melbourne & Hobart based Andrea Breen has a passionate interest in eclectic improvisation – sound, word, image and movement – and for res/pond/ing she explores creative process and production that emerges from that process. Her primary mode of expression is sound and word, and so responding with paint and photographs has presented unexpected moments of euphoria and pain. What you hear, see and read is improvised, unedited and, maybe, still in process.

Visitors to the Andrea’s exhibition will be invited to respond with a drawing, text or sculpture and to leave these ‘in conversation’ with her works in the gallery.

Andrea is an experienced performer/improviser and has participated in the national improvisation gathering ‘precipice’ and in the ABC’s Improvisatory Music Awards (1999). Andrea has a PhD from the University of Tasmania and an Honours degree in composition from the University of New England. She is on the academic staff of the Melbourne Institute for Creative Arts Therapy and works as a creative arts therapist with families and children.
