2019 Marie Ellis OAM Prize for Drawing Winners Announced

The major prize winners of the 2019 Marie Ellis OAM Prize for Drawing were announced on Friday night at the opening of the Finalists Exhibition at the Project Gallery, Queensland College of Art.

Major Prize Winner: Kaye Shumack “Walking down to Railway Square from Central Station, Sydney

Congratulations go to the Major Prize Winner, Kaye Shumack, for her work “Walking down to Railway Square from Central Station, Sydney.”

The Honourable Mention Prize was awarded to Julie Thornton for her work “With heavy feet and lofty hope.”

This year’s Director’s Encouragement Award was presented to Caitlin Turner for “Levels of Luminosity.”

 The Finalists Exhibition remains open until the 16th August: Gallery hours: Tues – Sat 10am – 4pm.

 Remember to vote for your favourite work in the People’s Choice Award, which will be announced at the closing event on Friday 16th August.

People’s Choice Award is awarded to the value of $500

The Marie Ellis OAM Prize for Drawing aims to encourage excellence in drawing as an important foundation for any arts practice. Up to 25 Finalists will be chosen by a specially-selected judging panel and their works exhibited at the Queensland College of Art Project Gallery during August 2019.

Our specially selected panel of judges for 2019 includes: Jeff Hopkins-Weise, Dennis McCart, Vernon Ah Kee and Nicci Haynes.

Finding Freedom | Call for entries

ASRC and Amnesty International are calling for entries of artworks for an exhibition during Refugee Week 2017 called F I N D I N GF R E E D O M - artworks which are aspirational about what we want to create for people seeking asylum.  Artworks should focus on the following ideas:

Seeking asylum is a basic human right and it is legal
All people have the right to live in peace and safety
Family, freedom and fairness are values we all share

Competition is open to all ages, 2D or 3D works. Judges and Prizes to be announced.

Brisbane exhibition showcases refugees' stories through art - ABC News Online

A Hazara refugee living in Brisbane has created an artwork for a new exhibition that illustrates his sense of still being in limbo.

Sha Sarwari fled Afghanistan as a teenager and journeyed to Australia by boat in 2000.He settled in Brisbane, started a family, and became an Australian citizen in 2006, but said he still felt out of place. "Even for me, living in Australia for the past 15 years, I haven't found my foothold in my life here," he said. "When I see my fellow refugees … it renews my memory that I don't belong here, I have to go back one day, so it doesn't let me settle."

2016 Marie Ellis OAM Prize for Drawing Winners Announced

Congratulations to the Major Prize Winner of the 2016 Marie Ellis OAM Prize for Drawing, Michael Armstrong, for his work “Traits of the Living (Dying)”! The Honourable Mention Prize was awarded to Hesam Fetrati for his work “Detention Centre” and this year a special Director’s Encouragement Award was presented to Elena Holzworth for “Pegged.”
The Finalists Exhibition remains open until the 27th August. Remember to vote for your favourite work in the People’s Choice Award, which will be announced at the closing event on Friday 26th August.
